1989 EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS
The 1989 elections for the United Kingdom's 81 European Parliament seats saw
a reversal of the position of five years before: Labour gained 13 seats to
lead the Tories by 45 seats to 32. The other British seat was won by the
Scottish Nationalists.
Perhaps the most remarkable feature of the election was the strong showing
by the Green Party, who not only forced the Liberal Democrats into fourth
place, but did so easily, gaining 15% of the vote to the Liberal Democrat's
6%. The result, in British parliamentary terms, was a sudden concentration
on the importance of the environment.
The Northern Ireland election was completely separate from the rest of the
United Kingdom. The Single Transferable Vote Proportional Representation
system was used. The Reverend Ian Paisley (Democratic Unionist) was elected
on the first count, John Taylor (Official Unionist) on the second, and John
Hume (SDLP) on the fourth.
NEXT ELECTION: June 9th 1994
